Teaching the Past in the Present: Gender in History
October 25 - 26, 1997
University of Oregon

Sponsored by the University of Oregon's Center for the Study of Women in Society, this collaborative conference involved teachers and scholars in reshaping how the past is studied and presented. Special emphasis was placed on gendered perspectives, the needs of diverse audiences, and the development of interactive electronic resources. The content of sessions crossed historical periods and cultures. The three primary topics covered were: women and religion; women and power; women and the arts. Conference presenters introduced materials drawn from a variety of historical periods and considered research methods as well as pedagogical issues applicable to a wide range of highschool and college curricula. Each session was prepared by a "research co-op" of teachers and academics who share areas of scholarship and teaching interests.

One of the major elements of the conference was the introduction of the Virtual Resource Bank, an evolving electronic database. This resource gathers sample syllabi, texts, images, bibliographies and other materials to support teaching and research needs. Conference participants were encouraged to contribute to and make use of this web site. In the meantime, anyone interested is invited to subscribe to a listserve established as a forum for announcements and discussion on issues related to the topic of the conference.

All sessions took place on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Oregon. Meetings and sessions were held on Saturday and Sunday and overlapped with another colloquium called "Global Baroque" . The conference offered the option for one academic credit in Women's Studies, administered through continuing education
